Federal Leaders Visit Erie to Spotlight Opportunity Zone Success

The Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership was proud to welcome several high-ranking federal officials to Erie this week for a firsthand look at the city’s progress through Opportunity Zones and housing initiatives.
On Wednesday, May 28, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner, Representative Mike Kelly (PA-16), and Senator John Fetterman (PA) met with local stakeholders and toured downtown Erie’s Opportunity Zone projects. The visit underscored Erie’s national reputation as a leader in OZ implementation and economic revitalization.
“Erie is a model of how Opportunity Zones can revitalize communities,” said Secretary Turner. “This would not be possible without local, state, and federal leaders working together with the public and private sectors to make these projects a reality.”
The group attended a special presentation on economic development and policy, then joined Jake Rouch, Vice President of Economic Development for the Chamber, for a tour of key downtown sites. The visit also highlighted Erie’s work to expand affordable housing and attract private investment through smart, long-term strategies.
“Opportunity Zones continue to create jobs and affordable housing in Erie,” said Rep. Kelly. “They’re pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into the local economy. Secretary Turner’s visit puts Western Pennsylvania front and center in the national conversation.”
The visit comes at a pivotal time, as Congress considers legislation that would extend and expand Opportunity Zones nationwide. Erie’s example demonstrates the tangible community impact of this policy and the importance of maintaining momentum.
